16 columns with cubic capitals dating from the Middle Ages (c. 476-1500 CE) have been preserved. Urnes stave church is UNESCO World Heritage listed and is the oldest and most highly decorated of the 28 stave churches still standing in Norway. Built around 1130, the church features ornamentation from the 11th century church that preceded it.

We take a car ferry from Solvorn across the Lustrafjord to Ornes. The ferry takes only 20 minutes each way and the church can be reached by a 10-minute uphill walk from the little hamlet of Ornes.
