Medulloblastoma is a primary central nervous system (CNS) tumor. This means it begins in the brain or spinal cord. To get an accurate diagnosis, a piece of tumor tissue will be removed during surgery, if possible. Medulloblastoma. Medulloblastoma is defined by the WHO as “an embryonal neuroepithelial tumor arising in the cerebellum or dorsal brainstem, presenting mainly in childhood and consisting of densly packed small round undifferentiated cells with mild to moderate nuclear pleopmorphism and a high mitotic count.” Prognostically favorable and unfavorable variants of medulloblastoma have recently been identified, corresponding to medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity and large cell/anaplastic medulloblastoma, respectively. In an effort to identify clinically relevant grading criteria for medulloblastoma in … Medulloblastoma.

The cells are close together and have dark nuclei. Medulloblastoma (also referred to as primitive neuroectodermal tumor or PNET) arises from the primitive or embryonal cells of the cerebellum. Medulloblastoma is a tumor that arises within the cerebellum and often grows into the fourth ventricle. The present study indicates that desmoplastic MBs represent a homogeneous group of neoplasms in terms of histology and DNA distribution. In contrast, classic MBs are lesions with different degrees of histologically apparent aggressiveness and a complex DNA distribution. Histologic, Immunohistochemical, and Molecular Profile of Medulloblastoma Subgroups. Classic histology was the most prevalent medulloblastoma tumor histology accounting for 85 (53%) cases in our cohort .

Variants of medulloblastoma (~15% of all medulloblastomas together): Anaplastic / Large cell variant. Desmoplastic/nodular medulloblastoma (DNMB).

Medulloblastoma is a cancerous tumor—also called cerebellar primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET)—that starts in the region of the brain at the base of the skull, called the posterior fossa. These tumors tend to spread to other parts of the brain and to the spinal cord.

It is high T2 signal and low T1 signal with only patchy contrast enhancement. No normal vermis can be identified and the mass is likely to arise from it, completely effacing the fourth ventricle and abutting the dorsal aspect of the brainstem without convincing evidence of extension into the pons.

Purpose: To assess the prognostic role of clinical parameters and histology in early childhood medulloblastoma. Patients and methods: Clinical and histologic data from 270 children younger than age 5 years diagnosed with medulloblastoma between March 1987 and July 2004 and treated within prospective trials of five national study groups were centrally analyzed.
